Calabar, Cross River State - A dozen armed robbers terrorising residents in River States have been nabbed by the police. The suspects were arrested after sustained intelligence and undercover operations during the Christmas Period in 2013.

Edem Basey Effiong (18), Emmanuel Nkalu (19), Aliyu Umaru (21) had a habit of dressing themselves in army camouflage; they have tormented residents of Ikot Omin, 8 Miles and Basin Development Authorities for several months.


Parading them alongside other suspects, the Cross River State Police Commissioner Mr. Kola Sodipo said they robbed one Imeh Stephen of Basin Authority at gunpoint, and extorted recharge card valued at N250,000, and N350,000 in cash of 350,000. At the moment of the arrest, a pistol, 7 live ammunition, Army uniforms, recharge cards and handsets were in their possession.

Daniel Sunday (25), Prophet Friday (19), were arrested on the December 24, 2013, at Ikang, Bakassi, with 800 live AK 47 ammunition, 7.62mm and 634v rounds of general purpose machine gun ammunition, 56 mm and 632 live assault rifle ammunition. They planned to wreak havoc in Calabar during the annual Calabar Festival.

Eyo Okokon Nsa and Peter Ibe were apprehended in Odukpani with 110 pieces of dynamite fuses, nine bags of ammonium nitrate used to prepare the explosive devices. The explosives devices were detonated immediately.

David Nse Abasi, Colins Okoh and Aka Jerome blocked Mkpani/Ekori road in the Central Senatorial District and robbed several persons of N79,000.
Simon Michael Agba, Samson Kalu, Abosi robbed one Iheme Tochukwu of N57,000. The sum of 278,000 00 was recovered from Godwin Samuel.

Mr. Sodipo said 48 locally made pistols were recovered from criminals, 3,893 arrests with 955 prosecutions made in 2013.
